Stealing MySpace: The Battle to Control the Most Popular Website in America, by Julia Angwin

July 27, 2009

After seeing a speech by the author on C-SPAN, I checked out this book. It’s a bit like reading yesterday’s newspapers–but it does give you some good background on how MySpace came to be. The “stealing” of MySpace by the News Corp. covers only about 1/3 of the book. The rest is the rise of MySpace before the deal, then the development and promotion of MySpace after the deal. The author discusses Facebook in one chapter and contrasts the two. It is interesting that MySpace styles itself as more edgy and working-class than Facebook, which is supposedly for the upper middle classes. At the time of writing, MySpace was “the most popular website in America,” but Facebook has since passed it by as the most popular social networking site.
